questions about using Wii for emulators

Thu May 24, 2012 3:09 AM

I am thinking about getting a Wii to be used exclusively for running emulators. Mainly because it is the only powerful console that supports true 240p - very important for me, as I am a "15 kHz" purist.

1. Do all emulators support 240p old school low-res 15 kHz RGB output for CRT TVs?
2. Is is possible to adjust the screen in the emulators in case I am not happy with its width or height?
3. Is using Wiimote comfortable enough to run NES, SNES, Genesis and other various platforms?
4. I don't like the idea of having to plug classic controller into Wiimote and have all that mess on the table to fall on the floor everytime I pull for the cord. Is there a way (other than wiimote) to plug a classic controller (or any other) straight into Wii WITHOUT having to use the Wiimote )including booting the console and selecting the games)?
5. Are there any firmware patches from Nintendo to prevent the emulators to be installed, in case I buy a brand new Wii, not to be shocked I cannot install anything etc.

thanks

Asteroids PAL Stella vs Z26

Sat Apr 28, 2012 12:30 AM

I have noticed that the PAL version of Asteroids I have behaves different in these 2 emulators. Now the question is, which is more accurate?

1. Z26 - display is jumping and colour loss is happening
2. Stella - display is stable, no colour loss

updating the screen on Genesis

As far as I understand the is no video RAM mapped in CPU space. Everything has to be tranfered to VDP's RAM correct? So how do you actually render things on the screen in software? Do you have to update the tiles every frame (reload them into VDP)? For instance this software zooming demo... or the intro for Ranger X etc etc... How much time left is there to do the updates..? I guess there is plenty of room to do the whole screen software rendering at 60fps...

Why are the 2 columns on the right joined together? It looks like some TIA limitation.

Stella 3.5.5 sluggish

Wed Mar 7, 2012 2:59 AM

Has anybody noticed that the new version of Stella is somewhat sluggish compared to the older version? For instance if I quickly go through the games meaning I run, escape and select another one, it very often skips the next game in the menu and goes right to the second one. Also the performance is much more sluggish. Before I could run an encoding program at the background and Stella would not slow down, but now it slows down everytime there is an activity at the background.
