Are you playing this in an emulator or on the real hardware? What does your RPM gage read when you shift gears.

I usually take my foot off the gas while shifting because your RPMs jump while your in-between gears.
If you rev your engine in neutral and then shift into first when the light goes green you can get a boost of speed of the line. It difficult to do without blowing your engine but it helps if you can do it.

I think my best is 5.2 secs but its been a while since I played it.
This is on the emulator MAMEUI32. I don't see what indicates the RPM gauge.

I got a 8-way joypad with 4 buttons arranged like a Playstation controller. There are a total of 4 shoulder buttons too, like a PS2/3 controller.
Controls: Press Up or Down with joypad, to move your dragster up or down.
Button "X" (like on the PS controller, the south button): 1st gear
Button "Square" (Left Button): 2nd gear
Button "Triangle" (Top Button): 3rd gear
Button "O" (Right Button): Gas
Button "R1" (Top Right shoulder button): 4th gear

It could be a hardware issue. May want to order some new switches for the shifters, the old ones do have a delay just due to age. I think I replaced them in my machine when I had one. Fun game, still like the 2600 version better though....smaller too :)
No, it's just a difficult game unless you know what you're doing. Maybe the 2600 version is similar enough that hints for that game would work on Drag Race. How do YOU succeed at Dragster?

My first taste of actual computers came on Christmas of 1984, I think. I got a TI-99. I couldn't program to save my life but got a kick out of messing with making music.
When I moved to Auburn/Federal Way, WA in 1988 I used a TI-99 with floppy disc drives and other accessories that I didn't have before. Good times.
My next computer ran on Windows 3.1 and had a 9K modem.. yuck!
