The Harmony may have killed my 2600!

Sun Aug 21, 2011 12:52 AM

I'm going to say this bit first - to the mods of this site, sorry about the image. I'll refrain from posting that kind of material here.

Anyways, after extensive Harmony use I have reason to believe it did something to my 2600's cartridge port. Whenever I removed it from the port, I kept hearing a kind of crunching sound. I didn't really think anything of it. But now the Atari doesn't even work. It shows the color bars and strange patterns when fired up without a cart but with a cart it shows black screen and with the harmony it shows dark bars on a slant to the right. I've since then picked up a new Atari.

This is in no way blasting the Harmony, it's a delightful product and I'm immensely happy that I bought one, but maybe someone can look into it.

If there's no way to fix the 2600, I'll put a message in the marketplace.

Also there's problems when I use the keypad controller. It keeps paging backwards and no amount of fiddling can stop it. It's not a big error, just something I noticed.

Once again, to the mods - my apologies.

Upcoming compatibility review

Mon Aug 15, 2011 7:50 PM

According to Google Checkout, my harmony has shipped today and will be here on the 18th. (Batari with the quickness!) When the cart comes, I've got about 108 games lined up to do a review on. Obviously I don't have that many carts but I will do a comparison with those that I have, like Cosmic Ark, Laser Blast, and things of that nature. What I'm DYING to find out is if Synthcart is compatible. NONE OF YOU ARE TO SPOIL IT FOR ME!

Well, I'm off to camp out by the mailbox for three days. Peace!

simple music player

Could anyone help me out with a simple music or sound playing script that I can play around with? something I could cut and paste my own data into. I just wanna see how its done. Thanks in advance.

Light gun on 2600?

Wed Aug 10, 2011 12:19 AM

I'm not a programmer in the least, I can barely manage using 20 GOTO 10 loops to make my C64 say dirty words. :P

But I am curious.

I've been doing a bit of research, and as we all know, Genesis controllers work on the 2600. I also managed to get the keyboard controller to work as a joystick, making navigation through Pitfall maddening.

So, Atari has all sorts of little tricks that can be done in terms of controller schemes. But what about the light gun? I would assume that works for the 2600 as well, since the controller ports are bi-directional and the light gun registering a hit would be able to be processed accordingly.

This has probably been thought up before, but I'm curious as to what the programming community thinks of it.

When did you first get a 2600?

This thread is how you came about your first Atari 2600 (or 2600-compatible :3) and why you keep it alive.

Technically, my first system was the one my father owned. He used to have a Sears TeleGames Heavy Sixer unit until the cats forgot where the litter box was and hosed it.

The first system I ever bought with my own money was the Vader model, serial number KT 830290421. Picked it up at Goodwill for $4 in 2004. Didn't have controllers, games, or even a power supply, but at last I had my own real Atari. And this thing is battle-scarred. It's missing screws, the front is cracked, and there's some scratches on the front from the previous owner trying to scratch off some paint. It's nowhere near showroom condition and never will be, but it's my system and I like it.

Communities like this are the reason I keep it alive. That and constantly looking for new ways to give my music more edge. The idea of walking on stage not with a guitar or piano but a 2600 is very appealing to me. Also, Harmony cart. :)

Okay, AtariAge, your turn.
