Atari Themed Christmas Presents

Mon Dec 26, 2011 5:20 PM

I had a good Atari Christmas this year, many of the presents from my wife being based loosely around Atari. Did anyone else get any Atari Xmas presents this year?

Pac-Man money box (with wakka-wakka sound when entering a coin)
Pac-Man keyring (from my sister-in-law) which makes wakka-wakka noises.
Pac-Man clock
'Retro Game Programming - Unleashed for the Masses' book (quite simple but decent DLI section in there)
Pac-Man 30th Anniversary game for the Wii.

Emulator Feature Request

Mon Dec 26, 2011 5:07 AM

I hope that this isn't something that has been asked for before, but it's something that I just thought of.

Would it be possible to have a feature which would (on pressing a button), create an encrypted screenshot? This would be useful for gaming competitions. This screenshot can then only be opened by the emulator. This would prevent anyone editing pictures in Paint/GIMP etc.

Maybe a hash of the loaded ROM could be incorporated into the security, so that people can't dump a normal screenshot, edit it and then have their own custom executable loading the screen, allowing for a secure screenshot?

Potentially (with the co-operation of websites) there could also be a mechanism to upload that screenshot to a central site which can be specified by the user?

Any thoughts anybody?

p.s. I do not play in the gaming competition here, apologies if it has been spoken about there.

Oooh! Look at the multiplexing on that! Grrr.....

... something for Jose to salivate over...!

Once more, thanks to Kaz and AtariOnline.pl....

Looks like multi-coloured multiplexed horizontal ships using PMGs.

And some nice software sprites on top, moving freely.

Cassette-Tape Compression

Sun Nov 20, 2011 6:08 AM

I'm no expert on the subject and have recently been wondering about Atari cassette-tapes and modern compression technologies.

Could we get .wav/.mp3 files of existing cassettes, then convert them back to binary data, use some modern compression algorithms and then output them back to cassette?

The idea is that we shorten the length of the load times. Why we me might do this, I don't know as most people are using SD cards, it's more of a proof of concept that it is possible.

Did games back in the day use much compression? That initial boot section which then changed the colour of the screen or displayed text or graphics, was there a decompression algorithm built into those typically?

Please feel free to discuss, I'm not sure where this topic will end up, I'd just like to know a bit more about the subject.
