How do you get that highscore table?
Is that available only in the "official" version?
Don't use a High Score cart (or equivalent).

But from what we're reading, if a game uses an internal pokey (and a CC2 pokey?) then the volume level will be too low for pokey sound, when plugged into the XM.

Yes that is what I have been reading too. Unfortunately, the POKEY release of Beef Drop gives precedence to an internal POKEY vs. an XBoard POKEY (which would also effect the XM if it works the same as far as being turned off), so it would effect it also if this is the case. Beef Drop actually always updates both POKEY's registers but it turns off the XBoard one if both are detected. On a CC2, you could just use a startup/map combination to disable POKEY but that won't work for the real cartridge.

I do allow A8 ports when the controls don't offer an advantage or take away from the uniqueness of the game. Otherwise, I'd be using it as well. ;)
So no emulators? :)

In Topic: is pin 40 of pia free to use and usable?

I think it goes to the Proceed pin on the SIO port. I don't think any Atari peripherals use it, but third party ones might, as might some reverter like serial interfaces.
