Interest check: Commodore 64 arcade and simulation games

Thu May 17, 2012 10:45 PM

I have two loose and one boxed game available: Flight Simulator II (boxed, appears to be complete), Frogger (Sierra On-Line disk version, loose), Summer Games II (loose)

As far as I can tell, all three disks work.

I'm wiling to sell these for cheap. Make an offer if you're interested.

Update: Flight Simulator II and Frogger are now sold. Summer Games II is still available.

SOLD! Apple II simulation, RP and arcade games, some boxed

Thu May 17, 2012 10:37 PM

The games that are boxed appear to have all their originally packaging, including all manuals, maps and so forth. The loose games are disk only (no manuals). I've tested a few of these disks, but I cannot guarantee they're all working, especially since several games span multiple disks. If you're curious about a specific game, I can at least test the first disk.

Boxed: Battle Group, Colonial Conquest, Might and Magic, Might and Magic II, Wizard's Crown, A Wizard's Crown Adventure: The Eternal Dagger, Wizardry: The Return of Werdna

Loose: Galaxian (Thunder Mountain rerelease), Hardball, Tharolian Tunnels (not pictured), Win, Lose or Draw (not pictured), Zaxxon

I'm willing to let these go for dirt cheap. Make an offer if you're interested.

Games of Atari: Commodore 64 Captures complete!

Tue May 15, 2012 10:46 PM

I am ecstatic and very relieved to announce that I have finished completing screen caps and audio recordings of my Commodore 64 game collection for the Games of Atari website!

I posted about this site recently in a blog entry here, and longer ago back when I first got it off the ground. The site suffered in limbo for a couple of years while I got distracted by other things, but last year I started work again in earnest, and now I intend to work on it every week. I realize the design is a bit lacking, and I already have an idea of what I can do to improve the presentation, but at the moment I've decided I like creating the content more than building the infrastructure. The fact that I get to play lots of old video games with somewhat reasonable justification might have something to do with that.

With the Commodore's completion, several more games now have full write-ups, including Gauntlet, Marble Madness, Paperboy, and others that I happened to own for all three systems I've captured so far, the NES, the Apple II and the Commodore. The next in line is the Atari 8-bit series, which will be represented by my Atari 130XE. Additional write-ups will happen as I capture games that I own for at least three of the four systems I've worked on so far. Expect to see articles for Centipede, Defender, Jungle Hunt, and several other classics by the time I am through with this bit.

After the Atari 8-bits, I plan on tackling the Atari 2600 next. This will easily take the longest amount of time, but it will be the heart of the site when I am done, with most of the game links "lit up" with content. I want to start planning for the 2600 captures now, because I don't want to settle for captures from the TV RF signal. So, question: Of a Vader 2600, a 5200 with the VCS cartridge adapter, and a 7800, which one will give the best quality when modded for S-video and audio? I realize there may not be a whole lot of difference between composite and S-video for 2600 games, but I still want to get the highest quality possible. I also realize the Heavy Sixer has the best video quality over all, but I'm hesitant to mod my Heavy. I have less qualms about modding a Vader, but on the other hand if the 5200 or 7800 would deliver as good or better picture quality, then I'd just as soon mod one of those and get two systems' mods for the price of one.

I'm also seeking recommendations or solicitations on having the mod work done for me. I'm not a complete stranger to a soldering iron, but at this point I think giving it to someone else will cause less sweating and take less time than trying to do it myself.

One more thing: Browsing the GoA site, you'll notice I have several Apple II, Commodore and NES links still greyed out. I have since acquired a few more NES games, which I will work on together with the Atari 8-bit games, but otherwise if you have a game I don't that you're willing to sell or trade, by all means, let me know! My goal is to capture only games I legitimately own (not counting prototypes and homebrews, of course), so I'm willing to buy!

Thanks for looking!

Wanted: Famicom cartridge adapter for NES (60 to 72 pin)

Wed Apr 11, 2012 1:13 PM

So yeah, apparently I'm very late to the game.

To tell the long version, I've got a handful of Famicom cartridges that I have decided to make screen caps from, and I don't want to use my RF-only Famicom to do it. A couple of days ago I went to Google to see what Famicom cartridge adapters go for, and that's when I first learned about how some of Nintendo's early titles, Gyromite in particular, actually had adapters inside their cartridge shells. I know, dusty old news to most people, but it was a revelation to me. Sadly I don't have Gyromite, and none of the other known titles in my collection were hiding any adapters. To add insult to ignorance, my one NES pirate cartridge actually does have an adapter... soldered to the 60-pin cartridge board hidden inside.

This all boils down to, I'm in the market for a Famicom cartridge adapter, to play my Japanese carts on my American system. I can pay money, or I can do a trade. I haven't looked my sale list in a while, but I think it's still fairly up to date. I have some hardware available also (consoles, controllers, etc.), so feel free to ask about stuff.

Houston has a new retro gaming store!

Tue Dec 6, 2011 2:15 PM

Apparently it opened in October. Today's Chronicle has an article: "The Game Isn't Over Yet for Retro Gamers."

Sadly it's on the opposite side of town from me, which for Houston may as well be in another state. But I shall get there some day. Heck I might even drive there this weekend just for the experience.

This just might be enough for me to stop wishing Bookmans would come to Texas.
