What do you do with a 1-MB upgrade?

Fri Apr 27, 2012 4:18 AM

I have several. I like them because they are neat, but I have yet to find a very practical use for them. Like the mountain, maybe "because it is there?" Not trying to be negative here -- just curious.

I've read before that with 512-byte sectors, that writing to a drive or card, it is faster than writing to the internal ram disk. (?) In the future, when we go faster than 1.79 MHz, then that won't be true, but even with 256-byte sectors, the MyDos menu or MEM.SAV loads essentially as fast from an "external" drive as from the internal ramdisk.

But still, what do you use your 1 MB upgrade for?

Routine Maintenance of Atari Power Supplies?

Sun Apr 15, 2012 7:26 AM

Is it necessary (or useful) to replace the large electrolytic caps inside the "repairable"-type Atari power supplies or inside the computers? Perhaps especially the 1200XL since it uses the standard AC-output power supplies? I've read before about these caps "drying out" and failing with dire Atari consequences, but I've never had any issues personally.

Decimal Addresses in any 6502 Assembler?

Thu Apr 12, 2012 5:56 AM

Of course, "WHY" is probably the first thought, but seems like it would be useful for working with BASIC subroutines that are going to be POKED in decimal. I doubt if any exist, but doesn't appear that it would be too difficult to use a "T" (for example STA 25600T) to distinguish a decimal address from a hex location.

How to get rid of (or subdue) the ASM-ED "Squawk?"

Mon Apr 9, 2012 8:45 AM

The loud "SQUAWK" made by the Asm-Ed cartridge, and Cntl-2, and some other software has always been very irritating to me.

Does anyone know how to calm it down (short of muting the sound on the speaker)?

Bitwriter Installation Issue.

Sun Mar 18, 2012 1:01 PM

After many years, I'm re-installing my Bit Writer in a Super Archiver 1050. The actual installation of the board was uneventful, but in order to write long tracks with the BW, there are some speed pots on a small board that must be attached. And there's the rub. My kit has 3 speed pots and 4 black wires coming from it My docs correctly mention the 3 pots, but only describe attaching two of the 4 wires. And of course, it doesn't say which two of the four wires gets connected.

Does anyone have any docs that mention the extra wires?

These pots are all hooked together with some small (looks like) switching diodes, so my inclination is to attach the two end wires and ignore the center two. But if no one has any better docs (or ideas) I may try to call Bob Puff and see if he can shed any light on it.

Thanks,
Larry
