BOBTerm Question?

Sat Apr 16, 2011 5:52 PM

I started playing with Bobterm a few minutes ago and it is dropping characters something terrible. I setup v 1.23 and am comparing with the Orion Express Cart which drops no chars at all.

Even when I connect to the APE Outgoing Terminal, it seems like every other character or so gets dropped. Zero dropped chars with Express Cart on the identical hardware. I've never used BobTerm until today.

  • Is 1.23 the best version to be using?

Disaster Averted

Sat Mar 12, 2011 11:19 AM

For anyone who thinks it can't happen here...

The other night I was running my main 800xl machine switching back and forth between the hard disk and the MyIDE+FLASH setup doing some connection tests to my BBS when a strange thing happened. I had the MYIDE plugged in and booted to a partition on my CF card and was checking some things on the emulator running on the PC when I heard a strange noise coming from the 800xl. The screen was doing something really weird (Purplish bands across it). I immediately shut it down and pulled the MyIDE+Flash cart out. The CF card plugged in here was so hot it burned me and a small hole about 1mm in diameter was burned into the front of it... strange. I waited a few minutes and rebooted to check the card - partition 1 booted up and appeared fine but I am sure some of the other partitions are toast - obviously some memory has burned up.

At any rate, I shut it down and didn't mess with it anymore until this morning when the first thing I did was the check the power supply to the 800xl. I pulled it out of the tray where it has been sitting since 2007. Sure enough, the Multi-meter revealed it was putting out 6.3 volts. Cut the leads off to save them and threw the brick in the trash. Plugged in another one and ready to go.

I was lucky... the 6.3 volts was not enough to mess up the 800xl. I suspect I need a new CF card.

Moral of the story... check your power supplies!! I could happen to you and you might not be so lucky...

Boot Factory BBS

Wed Mar 9, 2011 5:42 AM

Boot Factory BBS is now running on Altirra. Thanks to Phaeron for a lot of hard work on this!

I wanted to also note to users that the login is a little different now since Altirra now supports modem commands unlike the old emulator I used which means modified versions of the BBS programs are no longer required.

  • Use your terminal (ATASCII preferred) to connect to bfbbs.no-ip.com
  • When your terminal indicates you are connected, hit your enter key slowly (about once per second) until you see the CONNECT message from the BBS.
That's all there is to it.
