I am pretty sure, about 99%, it's an 8k x8 Eprom from SEEQ. I have attached the datasheet.

I'm sorry for doubting your abilities, it was obviously a miscommunication between us on what exactly I was trying to do. It was you that has solved my problem with your poke suggestions, in the end. I finally got around to doing the audio tape test and there was absolutely no sound, after wiggling on the SIO port I got sound and it sounds fine, so it turns out I have a loose solder connection on the SIO port, from too much plugging and unplugging over the years. So I'm confident once I get the SIO port fixed everything should work correctly. Thanks again, and thanks to everyones for their input. All good suggestions.

That's good news! And it's no problem at all. It was definitely just a communication issue. I know sometimes it's tough to communicate technical issues back and forth on a forum. Anyway, I am glad you found the problem. It shouldn't be too hard to re-solder the SIO port. One more tip, in case it helps: If the "ears" of the SIO port aren't secure, you might want to put some small machine screws and nuts on them to help with the stress of plugging and unplugging cables into the 1010. They are probably riveted and over time they just don't keep the connector still anymore. I usually cut them out or carefully drill the rivets out and replace with screws. I use #4-40 size.

You can't do that when it's autoload without BASIC. In fact, I don't think you can do it with autoload and BASIC. This isn't commodore, I don't know of any commercial cassettes that you load from BASIC, or get a chance to POKE stuff before loading. I'm happy for you that you know those BASIC commands to do the stuff, but other than that it doesn't seem like you know what you are talking about. I don't mean to be rude, I appreciate your help, but it is what it is with you telling me to do stuff you can't do!

Sorry for the confusion, I thought you were testing the playing of a tape in BASIC and you were just using a data/ audio combination cassette. My mistake. All I suggested was to put in a good AUDIO ONLY tape and play it through the speaker using BASIC. It should sound like any tape deck, if it doesn't, there is a problem, most likely mechanical, with your 1010. (see Posts #27 and #28)

BTW, I have been successfully building / repairing Atari hardware for well over 20 years. I probably know a thing or two. ;)
