Aha! Another idea stolen from Atari by Apple. :P

Amiga had 128 or 256 char filenames in 85. VIC20 had longer filenames than 1994 Dos 7/Win 3.1 in 1980 ;)

They tried the same dirty tricks with multitasking GUI OO dektop (and got fucked when an Amiga 1000 was wheeled into court)

Microsoft=thick cunts who believe their own bollox :)
Just to clarify, Microsoft wasn't suing for the idea of long filenames. They were suing over the how long filenames were read in an 8.3 filename OS (like DOS). It looks like Microsoft copied the MiNT/MultiTOS method of truncating long filenames with "~1" at the end. Nice try Microsoft. :P I wonder why the "new" Atari doesn't sue Microsoft for copying MultiTOS...

Even here on AtariAge I doubt you'll find many who think the Amiga 1000 was "a mess"
It's near perfect aesthetically.

I fail to see the "perfect" aspect. It's just a boring plain rectangle box with a floppy in the front, just like the Apple's, MegaST's and many XT's were back then. I'm not saying it is ugly, it's just plain vanilla.

I second that. However, the MegaST was not so boring due to its floppy drive, badge, and keyboard matching the 45 degree slanted lines that are the trademark of the bold ST/XE design. These little features set it apart from the other boring rectangle boxes.

This may be inappropriate to say in a memorial thread, but Tramiel's passing only makes me more eager than ever to see Curt's and Marty's upcoming book. So much of what we have always thought we knew about the Tramiels, and particularly about their years at Atari, has been based on incomplete or incorrect information. It will be wonderful to see a serious, scholarly account of those years, although I regret that Tramiel himself did not live to contribute his own first-person testimony.
Same here. There is so many books, articles, etc. on the pre-Tramiel era Atari that I pretty much yawn reading the same information again. It will be interesting reading new information that is not recycled in Curt/Marty's book. I am more anxiously waiting for volume 2 since I started following Atari more closely after the ST came out.

RIP Jack.

Wierd! If I go to "songbird-productions.com", I get the f***en search engine site. However, if I go to "www.songbird-productions.com", I go to the correct website. So much for the people who keep telling me I don't need the "www" suffix anymore. This looks like an exception. I wonder if it's deliberate...
