Does not playing used games affect next Xbox BC?

Wed Feb 1, 2012 2:13 PM

Since there rumors (sketchy ones, but still) that the next MS console will be locked out of playing used games, do you think MS would bother to make it backwards compatible with the 360? The last few generations have shown BC to be a big factor in the first year or so of sales, it'd be odd for them to buck that trend. Also, with so many 360 systems considered unreliable, MS would be wise to give gamers a way to extend their collections into the next gen of hardware. However:

*MS did a really sucky job of making the 360 BC.
*Most 360 games would be "used"
*MS probably sees the sales of last gen titles as just as "bad" as used games, or even pirated games.

Newish PS3 Disclaimer

After I downloaded the last system update, I find that every time I start my PS3, I'm greeted with a warning to please read the sytem documentation or whatever. I'm not quite sure what purpose this serves other than to annoy me. Is there a way to disable this splash screen?

Multiple Console Ownership Losing Appeal?

Two hardware generations ago, it made a lot of sense to own both an N64 and a Playstation, because the two offered very different styles of games, with very different experiences. If you only stayed in one camp, you missed out. In the last generation, you really needed to have a PS2 in order to get the major titles, but it also made sense to pick up a Cube and/or Xbox... no one wanted to miss out on Mario or Halo. And in the current generation, the Wii is the system nearly everyone has, in addition to either a 360 or PS3.

The thing is, looking at what the PS3 and 360 have in terms of system exclusives... combined with the very similar feel of cross-platform titles, I have a hard time saying that you really need to have both HiDef systems in this generation. You really could pick just one and run with it... and given that all three systems are really heavy on accessories and add-ons, it's making a lot of sense to be more critical of your hardware purchases. It seems like this is the first time in a long time you can have a solid gaming experience without owning every system on the market, IMO.

Do you agree? And if so, do you think this trend will continue? Are there any other formerly "have it all" gamers that are looking to go light in the next generation?

GoldenEye vs. GoldenEye Reloaded?

Hey all.

Kinda tempted by one of these... does anyone have any opinion as to which is the better version overall?

A Suggestion for the Lexicon

"Swamp-Owned"

...used to describe the terrible physical condition of many used video games. Coined this weekend while I was looking through Vintage Stock and noted (not for the first time) that N64 games were always in poor condition, even compared to older systems like the SMS and 2600. Either the games just weren't built to last or, apparently, the N64 was very popular amoung people who lived in swamps. Within 15 minutes, I'd applied it to games from other systems as well, making it a rather useful descriptor, IMO.
