+therealbountybob
Ok here we go folks, hope you've managed to get hold of some paddles, and if you're lucky a set that you can control!!! We have tons of games and lots of rules (I like rules as you know, especially my rules) this may be tweaked as we go, games may be substituted if we run into issues etc... Everyone welcome to play Up the Creek! Tournament closes July 5th 10am BST Rules Firstly - you must play with paddles / emulated paddles if you can. Paddles details here. Six games also support Joystick and another supports keyboard so if you haven't got any paddles, you can still play (but there may be a score reduction to counter any benefit). You have three passes; you can miss up to three games and be awarded an average score. If you have no way of downloading the games, substitute any games from your collection that haven't been played before in the HSC. You'll score 2 HSC points for each (and I'll set you some challenges once I see what you're playing). [i'd recommend saving the pennies for Atarimax's APE/SIO2USB ] Scoring will be points per players; if five players play a game then the top place gets 5 points and last place gets 1, simple :!: These points are totalled and allocated real HSC points (acceptable in many countries) as follows: 1st 24 points, 2nd 22pts, 3rd 20, 4th 19, 5th 18, down to 12 for 11th-15th, 10 for 16th-18th and 8 19th-20th and 6pts for any other places. [Ties will be decided by scoring on River Rat] If you can keep your own score charts and post them occasionally that would be much apprecaited Games on next post. If anyone wants any help at all please get in touch
+therealbountybob
The Games We have a varied selection of paddling delights, if this is successful there are another bunch of games that would make a nice sequel. Hopefully everyone will find a few that they like I've put together 2 disks (ATR's 1050 enhanced density - DOS2.5 mypicodos / basic menu) you of course can download/play other versions from your collections Download here: UpTheCreekDOS25-A.atr UpTheCreekDOS25-B.atr (ver2!) Ski down to 'Paddle Creek', overcome the gaming challenges in it's world famous arcade and escape down the river at high speed back to reality Details of the games, special loading instructions, play settings, and bonuses: [note: rules in 1st post] Downhill [P] [ATR] Ski down the to paddle creek from the mountain top... Boot Disk B with BASIC enabled (this game needs to be on a DOS disk as it loads a FoNT file) Set slope to 60 degrees using the cursor keys. Hold fire to slow matey down, point skis downhill to gain speed. There is a 10 second penalty for missing gates! Press Start (again) to skip course fly over. If you consider yourself one of the better HSC players play on intermediate and expert courses. If you are not someone who regularly makes the HSC top 10 then play beginner and intermediate courses. Times will be combined. Super Breakout (x2) [P] [ROM] Kill some evil bricks? erm must read the plot! Play on each of the four games (select). Scores for 'breakout', 'double' and 'cavity' will be combined. Bonus point for winner of each game. The score for 'progressive' will be a separate game. Kaboom! [P][J][ROM] Catch and defuse bombs in your bucket of water?! Players who regularly make the top 10 or who have ever won a HSC game play on 'small' paddles mode. Others select 'large' paddles mode (the icon in game shows this). Non tournament Bonus challenge - anyone beating Zylon's score on large paddles will receive 1 HSC point Wavy Navy [P][J][K][ATR] We played Space Eggs so I was pleased to find another shooter that supported paddles. Best to play the ATR version, link above, as it's the full version where the helicopters fire at you! If you want to play the easier file version it's on disk B, but would prefer the better players to play the ATR ver!] Special Loading - boot Disk A, then insert Disk B and press 1 (to re-read drive 1). [Altirra users 'change disk' using -File -Disk Drives and browse to disk B] Press select for the game menu: Press "6. Advanced" also press "8. Sound On". Press "S" to start. Clowns and Balloons [P][J][COM] Time to kill some clowns, or was it save them, left a bit, right a bit, arrrgh me paddle jumped Stupid thing to try: pressing pause (esc) when the tune completes and make the clown disappear! (I really must get out more) Press P for Paddles. Play on 'Advanced' (select) Novices can play on 'Beginner' but scoring is capped at 20K. Bonus Challenge - play on 'Expert', top three players receive 3,2,1 tourney points. As the game doesn't get any harder scores of 100K+ will count as a win on either level. LiveWire [P][J][COM] Tom Hudson's classic 3d grid based shooter. On later levels shields deflect your bullets back at you, boxes turn to sparks and they close you down, but you can still complete the level... if you're quick! Press 'select' for paddles mode. Spy's Demise [P][J][K][XEX] Squash said spy under various lifts (that's elevators to you to meet his demise? ) Press P for Paddles Make sure you turn it left before starting or you'll be crushed (like a fly!) yes I had to say it Juggler (IDSI)[P][K][ATR] Now this is the wildcard, I've never played it but it looks [checkout the advert on atarimania ] [ FIXED XL/XE Version here thanks Marius ] Needs 800/OS-A Translator, which I've kindly put on the disk. XL/XE users run the translator, press Start, after the disk reboots then run Juggler. Press Return to Start a game. At the level prompt press 1. Press Control P to activate paddles mode. (after game starts!) Press Control I for the menu. Tilter [P][K] [BAS] This is awesome! [ok not so awesome... the game is flawed so it'll be 2pts for playing, see post #238 for details] Use both paddles at the same time, final score shown after the 5th round. On Disk B (requires BASIC) Settings for Altirra & Stelladaptor users with real paddles: one is set for JoyAxis H and the other is JoyAxis V. Set them both to Port 1 and make sure both are checked under the input map menu. You can't check them both off under the regular input menu. You have to check them off under the input map menu. Then, when you go under the input menu, you should then see both paddles with a radio button next to them and they should work just fine with Tilter. [thanks to philsan/deteacher for this ] Settings for Altirra with mouse emulation of paddles: Add Paddle A (port1) Axis 1 as Mouse Move Horiz Button 1 as Mouse LMB. Add Paddle B (port2) Axis 1 as Mouse Move Vert. You must play using only up/down left/right movements - NO diagonals River Rat [J][XEX] Yes, joystick only. This is a gem of a game; escape from the creek in record time, great fun. In game Race and Time bonuses and watch out for those swimmers! Press fire to toggle speeds. Bonus Challenge 1 - Highest score at end of level 1 Bonus Challenge 2 - Highest level reached (indicated by flags on screen edge) Bonus Challenge 3 - Highest score at end of level 4 (after 'special' bonus) For each the top player receives 3pts, 2nd place 2pts, then 1pt for 3rd place. The person(s) winning the most games will receive a 1 HSC point bonus :!: Keep your eyes open for changes here folks. PHEW :!: Now let's get playing... who's that posting already, probably saying I forgot to put the games on

Marius
Perhaps I missed something... but do we have to put scores off all the different games we play in this thread? I'm afraid that will become a MESS. And is there a certain order in which 'we' have to play the games, or can I choose the game I want to play first? Thanks M.

+orpheuswaking
Interesting observations (Playing Clown Balloons) I started on my 800XL, but it's only composite, so I switched to a 130XE, and then huridely switched to my 600XL (with sVid out), Why??? 1) 800XL - Ok paddles slight jitter but nothing to affect the game at all, but couldn't deal with the composite display on my Sony PVM 2) 130XE - SUXORS paddles, can keep the paddle still and it will suddenly jump to the other side of the screen 3) 600XL - Expecting ok paddles like the 800XL, but no these are ROCK SOLID no jitter at all, they act like brand new (Bear in mind these paddles have new pots from B&C) So 600XL for my paddle games I think
zylon
While it doesn't affect me, the joystick penalty seems stupid unless it's against analog sticks. As for Kaboom, IMO use whatever size paddles you want if you think it'll beat me. Win or lose, I'm going to have some fun along with my devilment. I'm using stock paddles on 600xl. Video is worse, but the 600 responds better to the games at hand. I'll also be playing Super Breakout, but this one will have my full attention. +therealbountybob
Is anyone else having trouble getting any form of controller emulation recognised by Altirra with these games? I've probably tried at least 5 and so far the only success I've had is with Clowns & Balloons - which I hate!!! Clownist! To setup paddle emulation using the mouse in Altirra: From the Input menu: -Input Mappings -"Mouse -> Paddle A (port1)" To activate/deactive them From the Input Menu -Capture Mouse (or press F12 to toggle on off) The left mouse button is fire. Just tested in Kaboom! and was fine (nice with a pad mouse anyway!!!) To enable(/disable) BASIC for Tilter and Downhill -System Menu -Firmware -Enable BASIC You'll probably need to use the 600Xl/800XL firmware (not the 'default' emulator ROM) Download the ROM files from http://a800win.atari-area.prv.pl/ they're in with the xf25.zip (an old emulator) copy all *.ROM files in your altirra folder and then setup altirra: -System menu -Firmware -ROM images and browse/point to each of them. Good luck Tilter uses both paddles - on Atari800win+4.0 emulator the mouse up down axis is automatically mapped to the 2nd paddle making it ideal for this game... In Altirra I've edited the "Mouse ->Paddle A" setting and added 'Mouse Move Vert' on 'Axis 2' but it doesn't seem to work - anyone
Charlie_
It says I can use them in the rules. I have never won a game in this HSC and usually place pretty far down since I don't have most of the games. I am using the default setting. I just think its odd that there are different rules for different players!
+therealbountybob
I don't see why you have to take a penalty for using a joystick, most games are harder with it! Clowns and balloons is definitely not easier!!! C'mon get paddled up everyone If anyone's after a set of paddles ebay currently has loads, search for "paddles atari" - some for as little as £5 delivered :!: I just think its odd that there are different rules for different players! Shaking things up a bit in the HSC; these few tweaks give others a chance for glory
justin case
Clownist? Me? Maybe - but I still say its their fault for wearing silly shoes! I think you've outdone yourself on this one mate: I don't know whether to halve my score, double it or offer it as a sacrifice to the 8 Gods of Oldtimer Gaming! However, knowing that you've got way too much time on your hands I'll stick to posting real scores and the emulation settings I used to embarress myself So, Kaboom: I finally achieved a semblance of mouse control (before the bloody game overdosed on Speed) 1369 - if this were a Fist Person Shooter then the difficulty level would read as "Hell on Earth (with extra crispy bits!)" but it's not, so normal paddle / bat / bucket size. What? You want pictures? Haven't I just embarressed myself enough? Ok! There may be more to follow if I find myself with enough patience to fiddle with settings / prescription medication again! bluecat
River Rat - a favourite of mine - got 204,880. 44,650 for first level (reached level 4)
+therealbountybob
One more top paddle tip, probably bleedin' obvious but usually paddle 2 is the better one, less use may be, so play the games on 2 player and kill off player 1 I stuffed up disk B's menus, please download it again from post 2 folks - Downhill will then work, you should see the BASIC menu after booting it
