 The Vintage Computer Festival East returns on September 12-13 at the
InfoAge Science Center in Wall, New Jersey. This year's special events include an 8-bit music concert, a by-the-pound book sale, a build-your-own PockeTerm workshop, and the BASIC Programming Challenge. The keynote speaker is Ted Hurewitz who worked on RCA computers in the 1950s. Creative Computing magazine's founder David Ahl will
also be speaking on Sunday. Curt Vendel of the Atari History Museum will be giving a 30 year tribute to the Atari 800. You can view videos of last year's Vintage Computer Festival on YouTube.  New versions of Atari800MacX and Sio2OSX have been released. Atari800MacX is a native Mac OS X port of the popular Atari800 emulator, which forms the basis for many 8-bit emulators on various platforms. Sio2OSX is a peripheral emulator for the Atari 8-bit computers that allows the Atari computer to use an OSX based Macintosh as a disk drive, a cassette drive, and a printer. Atari800MacX 4.0.1 now supports VAPI and PRO images, Copy and Paste from the emulator, Configuration files, a new Hard Disk emulation scheme, as well as other enhancements and bug fixes. Sio2OSX version 2.1.1 adds preliminary VAPI and PRO image support.

 At last weekend's San Diego Comic-Con, more information was revealed about the upcoming sequel to the 1982 film Tron. The new film, titled Tron: Legacy, is set to be released in 2010. Tron: Legacy will feature Jeff Bridges reprising his role as Kevin Flynn and will be presented in Disney Digital 3-D and IMAX 3D. A high-resolution teaser trailer (previously shown at last year's Comic-Con but never released) is now available--make sure to click the "HD" icon to view a higher-resolution version of the trailer. For the best quality, you can download the trailer directly here. As if the teaser trailer wasn't enough, a recreation of Flynn's Arcade was created for the event, complete with a playable Space Paranoids arcade game seen in the original movie. Even better, a hidden room in Flynn's Arcade contained a full-size model of the new light cycle to be seen in the film. You can view a gallery of pictures from Flynn's Arcade here.

 Bill Kendrick of New Breed Software has put together a page comparing the Atari 1200XL (released in 1982) to a modern day Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. While obviously such a comparison is tongue-in-cheek, it's still interesting to see the physical and internal comparisons, complete with a variety of pictures. A specifications chart is also included, and you'll note that the 1200XL has some features the Dell is missing (such as NTSC output, a cartridge port, and two joystick ports). Some basic peripherals (such as mice and drawing tablets) are also compared for completeness' sake.  Two years ago, a Mega Man 2600 demo was commissioned by the organizers of the "I Am 8-bit" art gallery, held in Los Angeles on May 12th, 2007. Several Atari 2600 homebrew developers (Jon M. Gibson, David Galloway, Tommy Montgomery, Fred Quimby, Chris Walton, and Bob Montgomery) developed the demo on a tight deadline using assembly code and batari Basic. The result was an impressive Mega Man demo featuring four stages and a boss battle at the end. This demo has now been released so you can try it in your favorite Atari 2600 emulator. David Galloway has also started a Making of Mega Man 2600 thread in our batari Basic programming forum if you'd like additional insight as to how this demo was created (including the complete source code). Before you ask, there are no plans on making a complete Mega Man 2600 game at this time.

 Thanks go out to Curt Vendel of the Atari Museum, who has posted the source code to several Atari 7800 games. These games were rescued by Curt from Atari ST format diskettes that were thrown out behind 1196 Borregas Avenue (Atari's corporate headquarters at the time) when Atari closed up in 1996. You can browse the source code that's been posted over on the 7800 Games and Development page on AtariMuseum.com. There have been many great 7800 homebrew releases in the past few years, and having source code of this nature will only further help homebrew efforts along. For more information about the 7800, there is a wealth of great information about the system (technical and otherwise) at the Atari Museum's in-depth Atari 7800 Pro System section.

 The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that Universal Pictures has won the four-studio bidding war to produce a movie based on the classic Atari arcade game Asteroids. The script will be written by Matthew Lopez (Race to Witch Mountain) and the film is to be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra). The Asteroid arcade game was a big hit for Atari, and versions of the game (official and otherwise) found their way to just about every classic video game console and computer. Wired.com managed to get their hands on a rough draft of the screenplay, if you don't mind a few spoilers. No word yet if the movie will be filmed in black and white vector graphics.

 Our friends at Good Deal Games have recently relaunched their online store, giving it a new emphasis on homebrew games. Their "Homebrew Heaven" specialized store deals mostly with homebrew releases for a wide variety of classic gaming systems, stocking over 200 unique homebrew projects from authors around the world.  The multi-platform Atari 2600 emulator Stella has just been updated to version 2.8. This new release contains some significant new features, including:- Added CRT simulation effects as described in the AtariAge posting CRT emulation for Stella.
- Adding editing of extended RAM in the debugger RAM UI.
- All ROMs which include SC extended RAM will now have memory erased if you attempt to read from the write port.
- Patching of ROM for bankswitch types 0840, SB, UA and X07 is now implemented, but hasn't been extensively tested.
- Visual improvements to the CPU register UI in the debugger.
- Tweaked paddle control so that all positions are reachable in game 4 of Activision Casino in both NTSC and PAL versions.
- SuperCharger/AR ROMs now start with a random value in the CPU accumulator.
- Auto-detection for '3F' bankswitching improved; several ROMs previously detected as 'F8' now work correctly.
