 The first annual Austin Gaming Expo has been announced for July 26th, 2003 and will take place in Austin, Texas at the Marriott Austin North hotel. This event is the first of its kind for the state of Texas, and will feature a large number of vendors and exhibitors showcasing both classic and modern video games and consoles.  Sunmark has announced another Atari 8-bit cartridge that will soon be available in a limited run, in a manner similar to their recent production of M.U.L.E. cartridges. The game this time around is Rampage, which was released in Europe as a PAL game in disk format, but never in the US. Sunmark has modified the game to work in both NTSC and PAL televisions, and is offering it on their new Mega-Cart. Sunmark will begin taking orders at 10:00am PST on May 21st.  Back in the days of the Atari 2600, Atari included original mini-comic books with several games, such as Defender, Star Raiders, Phoenix, and the Swordquest series. We've just finished putting all of these comics online so you can enjoy them if you've never had the opportunity to look through them. This includes all five of the Atari Force comics, the three Swordquest comics, and the standalone Centipede and Yars' Revenge comics.  For all you budding Lynx programmers out there, we've just put a large slew of Lynx Developer Docs online. This is the original documentation used by Lynx developers for creating Lynx games, and contains a wealth of information on the Lynx hardware and how to write software for it.  Paul Slocum, author of the Synthcart and Marble Maze for the 2600, has announced his latest project: an Ultima-style RPG for the 2600! Paul has already made excellent progress in developing a scrolling, tile-based engine for the game. Some of the features Paul plans on shooting for include:
Large world, comparable in size to early Ultimas
Ability to save your place in the game
Large amount of in-game story text
Entirely turn-based
Magic, weapons, HP, etc.
Fight enemies from other Atari 2600 games

 If you're a fan of the Atari arcade classic Marble Madness and also have a copy of Unreal Tournament 2003, then you'll want to check out Marble Madness 2003. Marble Madness 2003 is a mod for Unreal Tournament 2003 that brings the arcade game into the modern realm with several new features, such as the freedom to rotate around the marble, zoom in/out, realistic physics, marble skins, and the ability to use UnrealEd to create your own maps.  The Windows version of the excellent Atari 2600 emulator z26 has been updated to version 2.08. This latest release adds USB controller support (yay!), a new PAL color palette, and support to capture screenshots with the phosphorescent effect.  It's been a while since we've updated our Atari 2600 Hacks page with new hacks, so it was due time for a huge update. We just finished adding 18 hacks that have been submitted to us or posted in our Hacks Forum over the past few months. There's a wide variety of hacks here, including graphics hacks, controller hacks, and gameplay hacks.  We've just finished adding six issues of Atari Club Magazine to our recently created Magazine Archive. This magazine was published by Atari in Germany, and appears to be a sister version of Atari Age Magazine that was published in the US. While the magazine is in German, it's still interesting to look through even if you're not fortunate enough to know the language. Thanks go out to Curt Vendel for providing us with these great scans.  Ben Heckendorn has announced the sixth revision of his VCSp Atari 2600 Portable. The VCSp (for those who haven't heard of it by now) is a portable Atari 2600 with a color screen, directional and fire buttons, paddle controller, and a port for attaching external controllers. Ben plans on building up to 40 Revision 6 units, so if you've wanted to get your hands on one, this may be your chance!  We have posted Thomas Jentzsch's PAL to NTSC conversion of Salu's Pick 'n Pile to our TV Format Conversions page. Pick 'n Pile was originally released in Europe and never saw a North American release. Thanks to Thomas who took the time to dig through the game's internals it can now be enjoyed on NTSC televisions (this is the same conversion we started selling a few days ago from our store). Thomas previously converted another Salu PAL-only game, Acid Drop, as well as many other titles. You can download these conversions and more here.

 Version 1.4.0 of the Atari800MacX Atari 8-bit emulator has been released. Atari800MacX is a native Mac OS X Cocoa port of the Atari 800 emulator. There are a fair number of improvements and bug fixes in this release, so you'll want to upgrade if you're running an older version. Please visit the Atari800MacX page for complete details about what's new and to download the latest version (source code is also available).

 Infogrames announced that as of Wednesday, May 7th, it would be changing its name to Atari Inc.. Infogrames, founded in 1983, purchased the Atari brand from Hasbro Interactive in early 2001, and late in 2001 began using it as a game publishing label. Effective Wednesday, Infograme's stock symbol on the Nasdaq stock exchange will be ATAR. You can find more information about the name change at Yahoo!  Pick 'n Pile is a game originally published by Salu for the Atari 2600 in Europe, but it was never released in North America and thus only available for the PAL television standard. Thanks to the work of Thomas Jentzsch, we are now able to offer a version of this game that can be played on NTSC televisions. We've just added to our store Pick 'n Pile, complete with the original box, manual, and both NTSC and PAL cartridge. For the new NTSC cartridge, we created a nice, glossy label that mimics the box artwork. You can learn more about this release of Pick 'n Pile in our store here.

 Dennis Debro has released the source code and binary to the current version of his Atari 2600 game Climber 5. This is essentially the version of the game we displayed at our PhillyClassic 4 booth, with some minor improvements. Climber 5 is an Atari 2600 port of an Atari 8-bit computer game that originally appeared in COMPUTE! Magazine back in 1987.  Matt Reichert of AtariProtos.com has given us his blessing to post the binary image to the unreleased Atari 2600 prototype Mind Maze. Mind Maze appears to be some type of memory match game, but is not a terribly interesting game and does not appear to be complete. We welcome everyone to try and discover its secrets!  Chad Schell has revealed more information about his new Cuttle Cart II project, a much improved version of his original (long sold-out) Cuttle Cart but for the Atari 7800. The Cuttle Cart II contains a wealth of new features over the original, including an on-screen menu system that allows you to select games to play, read manuals, adjust settings, and more. In addition, it has an onboard MMC card slot, allowing you to easily transfer games from your PC to the cartridge.
