 The team at AtariArchives.org is pleased to announce that the full text of the best-selling book The Second Book Of Machine Language by Richard Mansfield is now online. Published in 1984 by Compute! Books, this classic book is the sequel to Machine Language For Beginners, another of Mansfield's best-selling titles. The Second Book Of Machine Language walks readers through the creation of LADS (Label Assembler Development System), a sophisticated assembler written in machine language. It includes examples and program code for Atari 8-bit, Apple 2, PET/CBM, VIC-20, and Commodore 64 computers.

 We are pleased to announce two new Atari 2600 homebrew games will make their debut at the upcoming Austin Gaming Expo. The first game, Climber 5, is a port by Dennis Debro of an Atari 8-bit computer game that originally appeared in COMPUTE! magazine back in 1987. The second game, Star Fire, is a loose translation of the Exidy arcade game of the same name, given new life on the Atari 2600 by Manuel Polik.
Both games will feature original artwork for their labels and manuals, and promise to be exciting additions to the Atari 2600 library. AtariAge will also be demonstrating several Atari 2600 and 5200 games presently in development. For complete details about the games we will be releasing and previewing at the show, please look here.

 The initial source release of Virtual Jaguar 1.0.0 under the GPL license is now available courtesy of SDLEmu. This was a quick port so there is still much work to be done, but it does compile and run correctly on BeOS, Linux, FreeBSD and Win32. Here's a brief summary of the work that's been done thus far:
- Virtual Jaguar v1.0.0 GCC/SDL initial release
- Converted VC++ assembly to standard GNU assembly
- Fixed small bugs in SDL related items (keyboard/graphics)
- Added *some* optimizations to the graphics sources
- Added joystick support (not tested)
- Added joystick port support (not tested)
- Added frameskip support

 The archivists at atariarchives.org have announced that the full text of Atari Roots is now available on the Web. Published in 1984, Atari Roots is perhaps the best guide to Atari 8-bit assembly language ever written. The site includes the full text of the book, plus downloadable software and source code. This is the 16th classic computing book to be made available at atariarchives.org.

 Looks like another Jaguar emulator is in the works! Nathan Woods has been working with Aaron Gile's CoJag emulation to build a working Jaguar driver for the versatile MESS emulator. You can view initial screenshots of the MESS Jaguar emulation here. Always good to see more work being done to further the Jaguar emulation scene.  Citing a lack of motivation and time, the developer of the Virtual Jaguar emulator has pulled the plug on the project. However, the source code has been released under the GPL license, which can be compiled under Microsoft Visual C 6.0. A full compatibility list of what Jaguar games work in the emulator has also been posted. You can download the source code and view the compatibility list over at Potato Emulation.

 The GP32 has gained another Atari-related emulator, this time it's a port by Mark Watson of the venerable Atari800 emulator. Now you can play Atari 8-bit computer games on the go, if you're lucky enough to have a GP32 handheld. You can download several convenient packages Mark has put together on his GP32 Atari 800 Emulator page, as well as the source code.

 Have a spare Atari 800 lying around that doesn't work? Andy Hutson did, and rather than let the machine simply gather dust indefinitely, he took a Mini-ITX PC motherboard and managed to squeeze a fully-fledged PC into the Atari 800 case. The conversion even has an integrated SIO2PC board, allowing for easy connections to actual Atari 8-bit computers, as well as a mouse made from (of all things!) a Star Raiders cartridge.  The Atari Program Exchange (APX) was a software distribution model in which Atari would encourage end users to create software for their 8-bit computers. Selected software was then sold through the APX catalog, resulting in royalties paid to the programmers. Could you have had what it took to be an Atari Program Exchange author? You may never know for sure, but you can now read the APX Program Author's Handbook to get programming and documentation writing advice straight from the mouth of Atari, circa 1982. You can find this guide at atariarchives.org along with a wealth of other Atari-related computing books and materials.

 The Windows version of MESS (Multi Emulator Super System) have been updated to version 0.70. Changes in this version of MESS include bug fixes for the Atari 2600 driver, the addition of Reset and Start buttons for the 7800's Input menu, as well as a Pause button. Improvements have also been made to many other system drivers. Please visit the MESS Homepage to download the latest binary and source versions of MESS.

 Jaguar fans will be glad to see that work continues on the Virtual Jaguar emulator over at Potato Emulation. There have been several updates since the beginning of June, with improved emulation of Atari Karts, the Native demo, Worms, and more.  AtariAge is proud to unveil the previously unreleased UA Limited prototypes for the Atari 2600, Cat Trax, Funky Fish, and Pleiades. Two of these games (Funky Fish and Pleiades) were based on arcade games of the same name, while Cat Trax is similar to Pac-Man in play. The Cat Trax binary has been available for some time, but Funky Fish and Pleiades have not been available until now. In addition to the binaries, we also have boxed reproductions of all three games available in the AtariAge Store, complete with original artwork created by Dave Exton.  Sunmark Products has announced Alley Cat as the latest addition to their growing library of Atari 8-bit computer cartridges. Alley Cat is a popular 8-bit game created by Bill Williams and published by Synapse, and until now has only been available in disk form. Published in 1977 and edited by David Ahl, this book is a true classic, containing 300+ pages of articles and programs published in 1976, the second year of Creative Computing magazine.  Version 1.32 of the Windows Atari ST emulator SainT has been released. This latest version includes the following changes: - Writing disk support for .ST and packed MSA files
- User mode bus error fixed ("Posh" demo is working)
- Keep sound playing option when losing focus (windowed mode)
