 Frequent releases of the Project Tempest Atari Jaguar emulator continue, with the release of version 0.47. The latest version of Project Tempest has an improved and optimized video system, and since we posted news about version 0.45 two weeks ago, the sound emulation has also been fixed.  Version 1.3 of the popular 2600 emulator Stella has been released. This latest version has quite a few changes, with some of the highlights being:
Improved TIA sound system
Added support for F4 bankswitching
Pitfall II DPC sound emulation completed
Game state can be saved and loaded

 Version 0.8.0 of KStella, a Linux KDE3 frontend for the popular Stella 2600 emulator, has been released. This latest version requires Stella 1.3 (see above news item) to function properly, and sports the following improvements:
Large speed improvement in this release.
Many UI changes to reflect changes in Stella 1.3.
Made viewing of the preview window optional.
Preview window has been greatly improved.
Updated user manual.

 The authors of the excellent Atari 2600 emulator z26 have written a version that runs under Windows. This makes it much easier to use z26 with the latest Windows operating systems, including Windows 2000 and XP. You can download the latest Windows and DOS versions of z26 (as well as source code) here and can discuss the arrival of the Windows version in our Atari 2600 Forum.

 Version 1.3.0 of the Atari 8-bit/5200 emulator Atari800 has been released. Atari800 is supports many computing platforms, including DOS, Windows, Windows CE, Amiga, Falcon and forms the basis for several other emulators. Highlights since the last release include:
Nw HiFi sound (can be enabled/disabled in UI)
New cycle-exact Antic emulation
"H:" emulation complete (including subfolders)
Paged memory implementation (fast XE bank-switching)
New configuration file name and location

 Dance Dance Revolution fans will probably be surprised to learn that the Atari 2600 will soon play host to its own dancing game. First, Eduardo has developed a dance pad that works with the Atari 2600. Second, programmers Andrew Davie, Paul Slocum and Christopher Tumber have joined forces to create a dancing game for the 2600. The working title is DiscoTech, and the idea is to incorporate Andrew Davie's Dancing Baby Demo and Paul Slocum's music into a dancing game, while supporting several types of controllers (including some type of dance pad).  Pocket PC games developer HandyMasters announced that they have released River Raid 2003, based on the classic Activision 2600 game River Raid. The objective of the game is to fly a plane up through different selected courses, eliminating all the enemies you encounter along the way, trying to avoid hitting the canyon walls.  For everyone living up in the northeast, the next North Atlantic Videogame Aficionados (NAVA) meeting has been set for Saturday, February 15th. This is the last NAVA meeting that will be held at Video Game Connections, where the event has taken place since 1995. This is an informal gathering of collectors, so people are encouraged to bring carts and systems along for trading and showing off.  The NorthWest Classic Games Enthusiasts club has announced the dates for the 7th annual NWCGE Expo. This year's event will take place on March 15th and 16th in Kirkland, Washington. The NWCGE Expo is an event where video game enthusiasts of all ages can attend to see, play, buy, sell or trade classic video games and memorabilia.  CGE Services has announced the dates for this year's Classic Gaming Expo, to be held on August 9th and 10th at the Jackie Gaughan's Plaza Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. No additional information is available at this time, but the show's organizers are busy making plans to make this the best GGE yet. At least now you can mark your calendars in advance, and keep abreast of updates as they become available at the Classic Gaming Expo website.

 Curt Vendel of the Atari Museum sends us sad news that Midway Games West is closing their doors as of today. Midway Games West was formerly Atari Games Corporation, with several of the employees having worked for Atari Games since the 70s. Atari Games created many original and groundbreaking arcade games over the years, and we mourn their passing.  A beta version of the PocketLynx emulator for PocketPC devices has been released. PocketLynx is a port of the excellent Handy Lynx emulator. You can download PocketLynx and view screenshots over at PocketEmulator. Be sure to read the installation instructions, as there are a few additional files you'll need in order to run the emulator properly.

 The Windows version of MESS (Multi Emulator Super System) has been updated to version 0.64. The MESS emulator supports a wide variety of game systems and computers, including the Atari 5200, 7800 and 8-bit computers. This latest version is based on MAME 0.64 and also incorporate some improvements to the SNES support. To download the latest Windows and Mac versions of MESS, please visit the MESS Homepage.

 Spending too much time in front of your Atari 2600 and not getting enough exercise? Marco Lazzeri has tackled the problem by building an Exercise Bike Controller for the Atari 2600 well suited to play Activision's Decathlon. Marco took an AOL CD and modified it for use with exercise bike, generating the necessary left and right movements as the pedals are turned.
