AWESOME GOLF
The defending champion is about to tee off, starting the Lynx Open
Awesome Golf Tournament. Eighteen holes of golf at its finest.
Our furry friend Chipper will be your announcer.
GETTING STARTED
Insert the Awesome Golf game card into the Lynx. If more than one
person will play, each must insert a card. Then Comlynx the machines
together and turn them on. The title screen appears, showing
the number of players. One player will be designated the leader.
The leader must choose the course and make other decisions about
the game. Chipper's voice may be turned off by pressing OPTION 2.
Press A or B to display the Course Selection screen. To choose a
course in the U.S., U.K. or Japan, move the hand over the flag
associated with that course and press A. A map of the course
appears, showing the clubhouse, the driving range, and the layout
of each hole. Move around the course with the joypad. Before
beginning the game, you must go to the clubhouse and select certain
game options. Press A.
OPTIONS
This screen lets you change the following options. To make a selection,
move the hand over the box and press A.
Name--Press the joypad up or down to select the first letter of your
name and press A. Repeat until your name is correct, then select the
"check" mark and press A. If you make a mistake, press B.
Handicap--Press the joypad up or down to change the handicap. When you
have selected the proper handicap, press A. See scoring for more details.
Player Type--Choose the player's sex, color, and clothing. The
display will change as you scroll through choices.
Game Type--Choose Medal, Practice or Driving.
Holes--Choose either 9 or 18 holes.
Wind--Select None, Breeze or Strong.
When you are satisfied, select A to begin the game. If you are playing
against someone else, you will see their options also.
The course map appears again. If you selected a practice game, you
may select any hole to practice on. If you selected a driving
game, the driving range (D) is selected for you. If you selected
a medal game, the first hole is selected. Press A to continue.
A sign appears showing the name of the hole, its length, and the
par. After reading the sign, press A.
CLUBS AND DISTANCE
Now you can select your club. Each club is different. The woods
are ideal for the fairway, with the 1-wood (driver) being the
best for long tee shots. The irons are used for hitting the ball
from the rough or for short shots. Since irons have a higher
trajectory, they are especially good for hitting over bushes or
other hazards. With the pitching wedge (PW), the ball will often
stop dead when it hits the ground. The sand wedge (SW), gives
the ball the highest loft and is designed for hitting out of deep
bunkers.
The following list shows the distance rating for each club under
ideal conditions:
Club Yards Uses
1W 260 Tee
3W 235 Fairway
4W 225 Fairway
1I 225 Fairway
3I 200 Fairway
4I 190 Fairway
5I 180 Fairway
6I 170 Rough
7I 155 Rough
8I 145 Rough
9I 130 Rough
PW 120 high loft, backspin
SW 100 Bunker
P Putting
Point to your selection and press A. If you make a mistake, press
B. If you have a handicap, press OPTION 2 and Chipper will select
the proper club for you. (You can only do this a few times per game.)
PLAYING YOUR SHOTS
Use the Power Bar on the right side of the screen to control the
power of your shot.
To start your swing, press A. The Power Bar starts moving. When
the sight reaches the desired power, press A again (or you will
miss the ball completely). The Power Bar moves in the opposite
direction. Press A a third time when the sight is over the icons
above the Power Bar.
For a straight shot, press A when the sight is exactly in the middle
of the golf ball. Anything below this will hook to the left,
and anything above will slice to the right. The amount of hook
or slice depends on the distance from the center. If you press
A when the sight is over the question mark, you will hit a random
shot. If you don't press A at all, you will hit the ground and
get a penalty stroke.
Chipper will let you know how well you did on each hole (especially
if you're an awesome golfer!)
At tee-off, the winner of the previous hole gets the first shot.
Otherwise, the leader starts first. After tee-off, the player
whose ball lies farthest from the hole hits next. Note that lady
players tee off slightly further forward than men. In all other
aspects of the game, however, they are treated exactly as the
men. (The distances shown on the signs are from the men's tee.)
To putt on the green, use the crossbar to line up your shot. The
black line by the ball shows the direction of the slope. The
longer the line, the steeper the slope. Remember to compensate
for the slope when aligning your shot and when deciding how hard
to hit. When you are ready to putt, press A. The Power Bar moves.
Press A again when the sight reaches the desired power. A third
button push is not necessary when putting.
SCORING
To see the scores during the game, press OPTION 1. Use the joypad
to scroll through the scorecard. Scores over par appear red.
Scores under par appear green. Par scores are black. (In a
multi-player game, only the current player can call up the scorecard.)
The game ends when all players have finished the final hole. The
player with the lowest net score wins. Net score is your total
strokes minus your handicap. If you finished the course even
over par, for example, and your handicap is five, your net score
is two over par. The handicap system allows players of different
ability to play evenly against each other.
STRATEGY
Learn each course. If you know the course, you will know how to
avoid the hazards. Use the practice game to play troublesome
holes. Learn to gauge distance and slope when putting. Putting
takes practice. Learn which clubs work best in different situations.
For instance, you would not use a wood club to make a short chip
onto the green.
