Backfire Label Contest Ends Sunday!

Backfire Label ContestIf you've been holding off on submitting a label for the Backfire Label Contest, you only have a few days left! The contest ends this Sunday, and the winning artwork will appear on all Backfire cartridgs sold through the AtariAge Store. Backfire is a new Atari 2600 homebrew game written by Chad Lare, which you can download and try in your favorite emulator. You can view the many excellent entries that have already been submitted here, and view details about how to enter the contest here. Good luck!

SID Music on the Atari 2600

Visit Lee's Peek 'n' PokeFans of the Commodore 64 will be glad to hear that Atari 2600 programmer Manuel Polik (author of Star Fire and Gunfight) has been busy working on a SID to Atari 2600 music convertor. Lee's Peek 'n' Poke has collected several Commodore 64 tunes that Manuel has converted to the Atari 2600 so you can download them and enjoy them yourself. The music include Rob Hubbard's Sanxion, Final Synth, Commando, and Monty on the Run pieces, as well as Martin Galway's Ocean loader. You can grab the tunes here, and you'll need an Atari 2600 emulator such as z26 to play them.

Atari800 Version 1.3.1 Released

Visit the Atari800 Emulation PageVersion 1.3.1 of the Atari 8-bit/5200 emulator Atari800 has been released. Atari800 supports many computing platforms, including DOS, Windows, Windows CE, Amiga, Falcon and forms the basis for several other emulators. Highlights in the last release include:
  • Rewritten and much improved configure script
  • New cartridge types supported (38 types now!)
  • Disk Sets - loading and saving of D1-D8 set is possible in the UI
  • R: as the Atari850 serial port emulation added
  • Updated and improved m68k assembler emulation of the CPU
  • XF551 HighSpeed transfer emulation added

PhillyClassic 5 Dates Announced

PhillyClassic 5The dates and location for PhillyClassic 5 have been announced! The show will take place March 20-21, 2004, at the Valley Forge Convention Center, the same location as this year's event. The show's organizers have big plans for next year's PhillyClassic, and have already signed on Videotopia to bring a large assortment of arcade games to the event, pushing the number of machines on hand to over 75! We had a blast at this year's PhillyClassic, and will be attending PC5 in full force, with plans to introduce several new games at the show! Published in 1977 by Creative Computing, this rare book includes more than 250 cartoons and comics about computers and technology. The cartoons in the book stand the test of time -- despite being first published 26 years ago, they remain as funny and relevant as the day they were drawn. This book represents the 20th classic computing book to be made available at AtariArchives.org, and can be viewed in its entirety here.

Backfire Label Contest

Backfire Label ContestAtariAge and Chad Lare are sponsoring a contest to create an original label for Chad's new Atari 2600 game Backfire. This label artwork will appear on all copies of Backfire, which will be available in the AtariAge Store shortly after the contest. The winning artwork will also be featured on the cover of the manual created for the game. Chad continues to work on Backfire, and has several improvements in store for its eventual cartridge release. Virtual JaguarA new Jaguar emulator called Virtual Jaguar GCC/SDL, based on the Virtual Jaguar source code released at Potato Emulation, has made its debut. Many improvements and bug fixes have been made since the last release of the Virtual Jaguar emulator and several games have seen an improvement in the quality of their emulation. You can download the complete source as well as binaries for Windows and Mac OS X at the new Virtual Jaguar GCC/SDL homepage.

Tank AI Demo Released

Learn more about Tank AIZach Matley has released the binary for the Tank AI demo shown at the recent Austin Gaming Expo. Tank AI is a version of Atari's Combat that pits you against a computer-controlled tank (the original version of the game requires two players). Tank AI will only feature the Tank game of Combat, but several unique mazes will be included. Visit the Atari800MacX home pageVersion 1.5.0 of Mark Grebe's Atari800MacX emulator has been released. Atari800MacX is a native OS X Cocoa port of the Atari 800 8-bit emulator. This latest version adds a shortcut key to display the preferences panel, a change to allow the Header Write Protect Bit to be ignored in ATR images, and fixes a sound emulator bug that will allow Atari800MacX to be used with iTunes. Brown, the book presents a guided tour to programming the Atari XL computers in Atari Basic. EMUAPC Version 0.92 Released

Download EMUPACA new version of the EMUAPC (Version 0.92) Atari 8-bit emulator has been released. EMUAPC emulates the entire series of 8-bit computers on the PC, written in assembler and optimized for the Pentium. Improvements in this latest version include:

  • The DOS version of EMUAPC works with real DOS, Win 95/98/Me/NT/2K/XP and Sound Blaster emulators

Bounce! Demo Released

Download Bounce!Fabrizio Zavagli (author of Space Treat Deluxe) has released the demo for his upcoming Atari 2600 game Bounce! that was shown the Austin Gaming Expo last month. In Bounce! you control a ball bouncing on a checkered playfield, where your goal is to destroy all the tiles by bouncing on them without falling down. Different tiles also have different properties: some force your movement in a given direction, some give you a higher jump, and others cannot be destroyed. NTSC Polaris Binary Now Available

Download PolarisThanks to the efforts of AtariAge member CPUWIZ, an NTSC version of Polaris for the 2600 has finally been dumped. Until now, only the PAL version of the game has been available in binary form. The NTSC version has colors that look significantly better, and we've taken some new screenshots as well. You can download the binary to run in your favorite 2600 emulator or Cuttle Cart here.
